Just an observation:
I think it's funny that Chileans think you need to put things like candy canes and chocolate chip cookies in the refrigerator, but then leave out meat and leftovers for days.
Oh, international marriages. :)
(My response to finding my husband's half-eaten candy cane in the fridge and the soup I made yesterday on the stove.)

That's hilarious. I have wondered the same... more about what they are willing to leave out... for loooong periods of time. Are Americans too anal about the use of a fridge?
hahhahaha. yep. the stuff on my stove right now is like twice as perishable.
but seriously, a candy cane? that wouldnt even melt or spoil in sitting on the equator for a year.
My mother-in-law put gum from the US (Trident that we brought her) in the fridge and ruined it! They are crazy here! She also surprises me with the things she doesn't put in the fridge (typical) but the reason why is mostly like, "oh it'll be easier to warm it up"....nothing about the bacteria that is growing.....yuck!
OH MY GOD! One of the biggest fights I had with my bf was about us putting the pizza (you know like with meat and cheese on top) in the refrigerator. He wanted to put it in the oven. Like... the cold oven. We eventually googled it and turns out all the Spanish speakers agreed with him and the English speakers agreed with me. He put it in the oven... I didn't eat another piece.
If there's one thing I've learned in Chile it's -- nothing's perishable! Leave anything you want sitting out for days and nothing will happen! Not even to milk! BUT. Take one step inside or outside the house in bare feet and YOU WILL SURELY DIE.
sigh. i have this exact same problem.
